Choosing the Optimal Fabric Sampling Solution
When showcasing your fabric collection, selecting the most effective sampling method is crucial for attracting potential customers and minimising waste. Let’s explore some popular options and their ideal applications.
Fabric Sample Books
Also known as pattern books or swatch books, fabric sample books come in various sizes and styles. The best way to decide on the most suitable size for your pattern book is to look at the fabrics you wish to display.
Is your book a collection of different designs? Is it a book of small patterns or plains?
These questions will help us decide the most efficient sampling solution for your fabrics.
Stack Books
Perfect for displaying plains and small patterns. With stack books, fabrics are typically cut to the same size, with a few of the top patterns stepped back for further emphasis of the topmost colours.
To decide the ideal size for these books we advise calculating ‘from the width’ of your fabric roll. Swatch books are often described as being 6 from the width or 8 from the width. For example, if your fabric is around 1340 mm wide, you may have 1280 mm usable width. Start by dividing this by 6 or 8:
1280/6 = 213 mm
1280/8 = 160 mm
Your finished book will be slightly smaller than this due to trims and finishing, but this gives you an idea of the final width.
Notebooks
Also known as mini books, these compact solutions have become increasingly popular over recent years, and are ideal for showcasing smaller swatches. Some brands have found that they can go quite small with the swatch books whilst still allowing the consumer to see and feel enough of the fabric to make an informed buying decision.
Ring Sets or Fan Swatches
To minimise the use of book construction materials further, instead of casing in your fabrics to make a full book, ring sets or fan swatches can make nice, cost-effective alternatives to traditional books.
Consider where the collection is being used and viewed before making a decision.

Shade Cards
If you wish to go even smaller with your fabric swatches, then you can produce shade cards. These are typically a folded A4 card, and contain small pieces of fabrics mounted onto the cards, often with a larger feeler piece. The small fabric pieces are usually around 35 mm squared.
Sustainable Options
FSC Paper Stock: Using FSC-certified paper for shade cards and notebooks demonstrates your commitment to environmental sustainability.
Minimise Fabric Usage: Consider which sampling method is the most effective. Smaller samples are less wasteful, but it is important to make sure the consumer can see and feel enough of the fabric to make an informed buying decision.
Additional Considerations
There are a few other things to consider when choosing a sampling method, such as the preferences and needs of your target audience. Your samples must appeal to your target market if you wish for them to purchase your fabrics and must be inline with the market value of the product – it is hard to sell high cost fabric using low cost sampling as the expectations do not align.
Brand identity must also be considered for consistency. Ensure your sampling method aligns with your brand’s image and messaging.
Finally, consider your budget as this may narrow down your options. If you have a tighter budget, then you may wish to consider a more cost-effective solution such as ring sets or shade cards.
